Yves Bonnefoy (1923–2016) was a leading French poet, essayist, and translator. After early studies in mathematics, philosophy, and the history of science, he developed a distinctive poetic practice beginning with Du mouvement et de l’immobilité de Douve (1953). He wrote widely on literature and art, served as professor of comparative poetics at the Collège de France, and translated Shakespeare, Yeats, and Donne.
