Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (1938–2025) was a Kenyan novelist, playwright, and critic whose work chronicles colonialism, dictatorship, and resistance, and who championed writing in Gĩkũyũ and translation among African languages. Imprisoned in 1977 and later exiled, he taught at several US universities, including UC Irvine.
